General Information about Tape Art
How is Tape Art Created?
Creating tape art involves carefully layering translucent brown and colored packing tape onto thin sheets of acrylic glass. Each additional layer adds depth, creating darker shades that shape the contours and dimensions of the artwork. By meticulously cutting and shaping these layers with a scalpel or X-Acto knife, intricate portraits and scenes gradually emerge. For an immersive, step-by-step look at my creative process, I recommend watching one of my “making of videos.

Why is Light Essential for Tape Art?
Light is the soul of my tape art, it’s what truly brings each piece to life. Imagine sunlight streaming through stained glass windows: the layers of tape function in a similar way, allowing illumination to filter through and create vibrant, intricate images. Any form of lighting, sunlight, traditional bulbs, LEDs, or specially designed light boxes, can beautifully illuminate tape artworks, highlighting their depth and color.
Outdoors, urban lighting such as street lamps naturally frames and enhances the artworks. For indoor settings, we’ve designed customized LED light boxes specifically tailored to showcase each artwork at its best. These provide a gentle, warm glow at a low temperature, making them safe to leave illuminated continuously, showcasing the piece without any worry.

What Happens if the Light Stops Working?
The LED lights used in my artworks are extremely reliable, designed for longevity, and typically last around 50,000 hours—so the chances of them failing are minimal. Occasionally, adapters may reach the end of their lifespan after several years, but replacing these components is straightforward thanks to our modular LED system.
If you do encounter any lighting issues, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Just reach out to us at info@maxzorn.com, and we’ll gladly guide you through the simple steps for replacing the LED strips or adapters, ensuring your artwork continues to shine beautifully.
Do the Light Boxes Have Batteries, or How Are They Powered?
All light boxes require connection to a standard electrical outlet. When you purchase an artwork, we include an adapter/charger that matches your region, along with a practical extension cord.
While we’ve explored battery-powered options, current solutions have proven impractical due to significantly higher costs. However, we’ve developed some clever and visually discreet methods for handling the thin power cable. For instance, during exhibitions, we often hide cables by neatly taping them to walls and simply painting over them with matching wall color, making them virtually invisible. If you need additional advice or tips on concealing cables in your own space, just let us know—we’re happy to help!
How Did You Come Up With the Idea for Tape Art?
I wanted to create a new kind of urban art that embraces the nighttime, and Amsterdam’s street lamps provided the perfect inspiration, illuminated, inviting, and abundant.
Initially, I experimented by adding brown packing tape to larger areas of my marker drawings. But once I placed these early artworks onto street lamps, I was amazed by how beautifully the light interacted with the tape, bringing depth and dimension that markers alone couldn’t achieve. That moment sparked the idea of leaving markers behind entirely and fully committing to creating illuminated images from layers of tape.

What is a Tape Art “Series,” of similar Originals?
A “series” is a collection of original artworks exploring a common theme or motif, each individually handmade, unique, and signed. Working in series allows me to delve deeper into a subject and create artworks more efficiently, making original pieces more affordable and accessible compared to singular, standalone motifs.
While each artwork within a series shares a common visual concept, every piece naturally has its own distinct character, nuances, and slight variations, no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Think of it as a Broadway play: although the script remains consistent, each night’s performance carries its own unique dynamic.

Why Do You Create Artworks in Series?
Creating artworks in series allows me to explore a theme more deeply and work more efficiently, which makes original art more accessible and affordable compared to unique, one-time-only motifs. Each artwork within a series is meticulously handmade, signed, and entirely original.
Keep in mind, working in series is just one factor influencing an artwork’s value. Other key aspects include size, popularity, reputation, and availability. If you’re interested in browsing available series or learning more about my collectible tape artworks, visit the Buy section.
How Long Does Max Zorn’s Tape Art Last?
Tape art as a medium traditionally embraced impermanence, with early street pieces intentionally designed for short-lived urban interventions. Max Zorn’s artwork, however, uniquely bridges the gap between ephemerality and long-term preservation. Utilizing museum-grade archival methods, Zorn ensures that his fine art pieces are crafted for durability and longevity.
Each artwork is meticulously sealed, preventing environmental factors such as humidity, oxygen, and pollutants from compromising the adhesive quality of the tape. Additionally, the layers of tape are encased between sheets of UV-resistant acrylic glass, safeguarding the work from sunlight-induced fading or damage. LED lighting, chosen specifically for its cool temperature and low energy consumption, further preserves the artwork’s integrity.
Remarkably, even Zorn’s outdoor installations—such as those displayed on street lamps—have shown significant resilience, enduring exposure to harsh weather conditions for years without substantial deterioration.
Why Is There a Waiting List for Max Zorn’s Tape Art?
Max Zorn’s artworks are highly sought-after, often resulting in waiting lists of up to 12 months. Although artworks may be released as part of a defined series, not all pieces within that series are created upfront. Due to high demand, Zorn personally handcrafts each piece individually, dedicating considerable time and meticulous care to maintain exceptional quality and uniqueness. This process, combined with steadily increasing interest from collectors worldwide, naturally leads to extended waiting periods for his most popular editions.
