Max Zorn: subjects,
atmosphere and influences

Film noir, Americana, beautiful women, city lights and departures—eleven ways into Max Zorn’s original tape art.

These eleven artworks are examples of Max Zorn’s oeuvre, not works available for immediate purchase. They provide a reference for taste and atmosphere; the newsletter connects that interest to new artworks and future opportunities to collect.

A taste for classic cars can lead to several very different Max Zorn artworks. The solitary man and red coupe in Caribbean Nights give motoring a different charge from the woman in Even Tide, or the open daylight of Diner by the Sea. The car can be the first attraction. The person beside it decides what kind of scene we have entered.

Max builds these pictures by hand from layers of packing tape on acrylic glass. Illuminated from behind, they combine figurative art, the atmosphere of cinema and the physical presence of light art. His settings draw freely on different periods. In interviews he has named Hopper, American literature, Spaghetti Westerns, the Roaring Twenties and the 1950s, alongside modern skylines. The following works show how differently that world can be lived in. Art Republik interview · BBC interview

Cars, coastlines and travel

Classic motoring · Tropical noir · Reserve

Caribbean Nights

The red coupe has the curves and confidence of a car worth dressing for. Its lights burn against the wet-looking ground. A man in a dark suit stands between it and a second car, hands in pockets, looking away from us. Palms and lamps carry the eye along the waterfront. The scene gives vintage motoring the suspense of classic spy cinema: expensive surfaces, a composed figure and very little information about his business there.

The strongest connection is the combination of the car and the solitary man. For a warmer, more social evening, look at Neon Dreams.

Female presence · Waterfront glamour · Classic cars

Even Tide

A broad white hat, a dark sleeveless dress, an arm resting against the car. The woman is close to us; the boulevard runs deep into the distance behind her. Headlights, palm trunks, high buildings and open water divide the picture into bright intervals, while the fins of a second car catch the light at the right. Her stillness gives this busy waterfront its centre. The atmosphere is poised and sensual, with the ease of a grand evening promenade.

A particularly close fit for someone who wants a strong female figure, cinematic elegance and motoring in the same image.

Road trips · A red convertible · Coastal daylight

Diner by the Sea

A red roadster dominates the foreground, its driver seen from behind. The diner stands to the left; a GAS / CAFÉ / MOTEL sign rises above another car at the right. Palms and a broad pale sky give the composition its holiday pace. Here the appeal of Americana is open and inviting: the shape of a beautiful car, the promise of a meal and a road that can wait a little longer.

A brighter choice within Max’s motoring world, with more daylight and roadside pleasure than the reserve of Caribbean Nights.

Seaside elegance · Vintage luxury · Space to linger

Empire of Glass

A suited man leans against a red vintage car on the beach. Its round headlamps, upright grille, curved wings and whitewall tyres fill the foreground. His head turns towards the open water. Behind him, an amusement pier carries the SANDPIPER sign and a Ferris wheel against the pale sky. The formal clothes and elaborate car have found themselves somewhere with very little to hurry them along.

For automotive elegance, coastal space and an absorbed male figure. MUCA identifies Empire of Glass in its City Lights exhibition imagery; that is a documented exhibition connection. MUCA’s original page

Vintage aviation · Key West and Havana · Departure

90 Miles

A propeller airliner sits before a hangar marked KEY WEST and HAVANA. In front of it, a man bends over his papers, hat low, tie hanging between his braces. Two smaller figures stand near the aircraft. The plane fills the middle distance; the bent head and scattered papers keep our attention on the traveller. The picture holds the particular pleasure of a journey before it begins, while the destination still has room for invention.

For aviation, island routes and the romance of travel before the jet age.

City nights and private lives

Evening dress · Architecture · A private view

City Lights

The open back of an emerald dress faces the viewer. Beyond the blonde woman and the pale curve of her balcony, a city avenue drops between tall, closely worked buildings. Windows, traffic and streetcars become smaller and more numerous as the eye travels down. Her figure gives all that urban scale a point of intimacy. The view carries the exhilaration of a city still wide awake, with a little distance from its demands.

For a love of skylines accompanied by fashion, feminine beauty and a private vantage point.

Romance · Theatre streets · Metropolitan scale

Let them have the rest,
we own the night baby

The couple occupies the left of a vast city scene. Her head rests against his shoulder; her hand reaches around his waist. Below them are crowds, streetcars, old automobiles and theatre signs, including the words of the title. The avenue recedes through so many lit windows and crowded pavements that the eye can wander a long way from the two figures. The embrace is what gives that abundance its emotional direction: the pleasure of being with one person while a whole city goes on around you.

The three-metre composition combines an intimate relationship with the scale of a major cityscape. It offers a fuller, more celebratory version of urban life than a solitary street scene.

Couples · Nightlife · A tropical triptych

Neon Dreams

The white dress occupies the tall middle panel. His arm holds her waist; hers extends around his back. A blue car, palm fronds and pedestrians move the scene out across the two flanking panels, with warm shopfronts reflected on the pavement. The lovers belong to the street’s evening life, close enough for the embrace to remain the first thing we notice. The three-part format lets the city spread around them.

Choose this direction for public glamour and physical closeness: a dressed-up couple, a busy night and a composition with room to expand across a wall.

The all-night diner · Male portraiture · Chrome and neon

Americana

The diner’s curved windows show a customer at the counter, a row of stools and hanging lights. Outside, a man in a white shirt, waistcoat and tie keeps his hands in his pockets beside a green coupe. He has the picture’s composure; the diner supplies its welcome. The ALL NIGHT CAFÉ sign, palms and long reflections bring the American roadside into a warmer, more glamorous climate.

For someone drawn to diners, vintage design and a self-contained male protagonist. Its attraction is as much in the figure’s presence as in the car.

Interiors and imagined worlds

Female portraiture · Rich interiors · Sunlight

Reverie

The red chair, green foliage and dark dress frame a woman turned towards a tall arched window. Sunlight crosses her bare shoulders and face. The room has height and rich architectural detail, but the figure stays close; we can follow the angle of her arm and the folds of the fabric.

For someone attracted to Max’s elegant figures who prefers daylight, plants and an interior to cars or nocturnal streets.

Urban fantasy · Tenderness · Winter and the carousel

Untold Fairy Tales

A woman in a full red dress sits on a huge reclining polar bear. Her head is lowered, her hands gathered close; the animal rests beside a brightly lit carousel. Snow, globe lamps and a New York skyline give the encounter a recognisable city to inhabit. The bear stretches across the pavement as comfortably as a sleeping dog. The dress and the bear’s white fur carry the tenderness of the scene, while the carousel keeps a little childhood in this otherwise sophisticated world.

For narrative fantasy, animals and winter cities, with a strong central figure and the same precise colour accents found in Max’s cinematic scenes.

Why these scenes keep opening up

In Tales of Another Time, Anabel Roque Rodríguez wrote about characters whose appearance and inner life do not neatly coincide. Max told Widewalls that he is drawn to moments whose outcomes could still turn towards love or heartbreak, success or defeat. Those observations help explain the restraint in the images: an arm around a waist, a face turned away, a man paused beside a car. There is enough to feel, and room to keep looking. Rodríguez · Widewalls

Up close, the physical work adds another interest. A shadow has thickness; a reflected headlamp is built through decisions about how much tape the light must cross. The original is the cut and layered material itself, housed with illumination. Max on the material, Art Business News

Living with the atmosphere

The connection can begin with a room: the reserved motoring world of Caribbean Nights in a home bar, the greenery and private interior of Reverie near a reading chair, or the city-wide scale of Let them have the rest, we own the night baby across a larger wall. The choice still rests on the scene the collector wants to live with.

The physical format adds another connection. Cigar boxes invite close looking; original Coca-Cola crates bring vintage Americana into the frame itself. Warm, dimmable illumination becomes part of the evening setting. Art for interiors and commissions shows these formats and room settings, with lighting information and a route to discuss a project.
