These amazing, cinematic portraits are the work of street artist Max Zorn – and are all the more impressive because his only tools are rolls of packing tape and a scalpel.

Mr. Zorn, who is based in Amsterdam, Holland, hangs his translucent pieces over street lamps, where the light illuminates the sepia tones and helps bring them to life. The artist works with just one colour of tape, but creates multiple shades by building up the layers on pieces of plexiglas.

Shedding light on the scene: Artist Max Zorns hangs his translucent portraits over streetlamps, bringing their sepia tones to life

Caught on tape: Mr Zorn uses a scalpel to craft the intense expressions on his subjects’ faces, layering the tape to create light and shade

Strong character: Robert De Niro’s iconic performance in Raging Bull is among those to get the tape treatment. Each brown-toned image resembles an old photographic negative, or a film still.

The incredible detail carved into each piece is achieved with a scalpel, so Mr Zorn has literally carved out each smile and frown.
